A routing number is a nine-digit code that uniquely identifies your financial institution. Banks started using routing numbers in the early 20th century to streamline transactions and reduce the chance of errors. As the banking industry has evolved, so has the use of routing numbers.
An account number is a string of numbers and sometimes other characters or letters that identify a specific account within a financial institution. If you have multiple accounts within the same bank, like a savings account and a checking account, each account will have its own unique number.
Both the routing number and account number are printed on any paper checks you have. If you don't have checks, you can find your routing number through online banking, in the mobile app or using the quick reference chart below.
Your bank routing number is the first nine-digit number on the bottom left corner of each check. It's enclosed between the |: and |: symbols.
Note: Your checking account number appears to the right of the routing number.
If you don't use paper checks, you can easily look up your Citizens routing and account numbers, either on the website or through our mobile app.
If you have online access to your Citizens checking or savings account, follow the steps below:
Your account number will also be listed under "Account Details" — click "View" to see the full number.
Once you are in the mobile app, navigate to the accounts menu and select the account for which you need the routing number. At the top of the screen, under the available balance, click "Show Account Info" and your account number and routing number will be displayed. For more information, use this interactive demo.
There are a variety of reasons you may need your routing number, either to receive or send payment. Some common scenarios include:
In some cases, you may be asked to provide your bank's ABA number or transit number. Those are two other names for a routing number. ABA stands for American Bankers Association, the organization that first developed and still issues routing numbers to eligible financial institutions.
An ABA routing number works if you want to send or receive money in the U.S. If you want to send money to a company or individual in another country, a SWIFT code comes into play. Your bank's SWIFT code won't be the same as its routing number. Usually, SWIFT codes contain eight or 11 digits.
SWIFT stands for the Society for Worldwide International Financial Telecommunications, which many banks use when transferring money over borders. SWIFT is an intermediary that facilitates the transfer process but doesn't perform the transfers itself.
This reference chart shows all of the Citizens routing numbers. Your routing number is based on the state where you opened the bank account.
